Regional matters, including common infrastructure and further
development of commercial relations between Albania and Montenegro were
the center of discussion between Albanian Foreign Minister Edmond
Haxhinasto and his Montenegrin homologue, Milan Rocen.

The special topic was the deepening of the Buna River in both sides of the borders, for making it navigable and in order to prevent floods that have caused great damages in both countries during the last couple of years. Both governments have agreed on a common project.

“We discussed with Minister Rocen about our common infrastructure projects that connect our countries. Such a project is the road at Plava and Gucia, a project that serves to Southern and Southeastern Montenegro areas, which could connect with Podgorica by passing through the Albanian territory. We also discussed on other projects, for the Shkoder Lake and its ecosystem, for making Buna River navigable and for making good use of all extraordinary tourist and economic potentials of Northeastern Albania, in cooperation with Montenegro”, Haxhinasto declared.

The Foreign Montenegrin Minister underlined the significance of the road that connects Plava and Gucia with Podgorica through the Albanian highlands in Vermosh.

The Montenegrin part has finished the road construction in their territory, and now it is up to the Albanian government to construct the road that connects the farthest northern Albanian territory with Montenegro, giving more opportunities to the residents of this area.

“Other concrete discussions were about the assessment of damages that were caused by the floods in Albania and Northern Montenegro in the recent two years, for deepening the Buna River before autumn and winter, because if we wait, same things will happen. We expressed our pleasure that our citizens will be able to travel through both countries only with identity documents”, Rocen said.

The Montenegrin Minister mentioned the need of finding a model that would involve Kosovo in all regional initiatives. The head of the Montenegrin diplomacy held other meetings with the Albanian President Bamir Topi and the Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
