The Albanian government approved harsher measures in the Criminal Code
against several legal offenses. Some crimes that used to be penalized
with fines will now have prison sentences as punishment.

These amends are mostly focused on harshening rules for electricity theft, users of explosives, sale of illegal cellphone SIM cards, and traffic violations.

“Through these measures in the Criminal Code we will strongly influence the reduction of these crimes”, the Minister declared.

Electricity theft will be punished with five years in prison for illegal connections in families, and eight years for businesses.

The sale of illegal SIM cards will be punished with 10 to 30 days in prison.

“These safety measures are caused by recent events which spurred concerns among the public”, Tahiri declared.

The Minister stated that the Criminal Code for explosive substances has now punishments ranging from five to eight years in prison. For transportation of explosive substances for criminal reasons, the measure ranges from 15 to 20 years in prison.

The government will not remove the moratorium for high-powered boats in the sea between Albania and Italy, but there will be regulations for their usage for tourist reasons.

The Minister declared that from 2009 to 2010, the Ministry has issued 150.000 passports, which is a very high number. Passports for children were given for a 10 year term, but the Minister declared that the law says that the expiration period for children is only five. Today’s government decision has increased one year to their legal deadline.

The Minister stated that the rules for driving under influence have also changed with up to three years in prison.

“These Criminal Code amends will pass to the Parliament for approval”, Tahiri declared.
