Hailstorm destroys dozens of hectares of peach and fruit trees in Peqin

Yesterday a hailstorm hit the villages of Shezë and Gjocaj in Peqin in central Albania, almost completely destroying the orchard production.
About 20 hectares of peaches were irreversibly damaged, while other farmers’ crops were also damaged.
Farmers feel hopeless as all the investments of a year were destroyed in a matter of minutes.
The farmers of the area live only by these products as their only livelihood.
“The main base product of our area is the peach, the destrucion here is over 80 percent as all the investments of a year were destroyed in a few minutes.
The investment and the damage is very high, we had never seen such hail bursts”, state the interviewed farmers.
They add that they don’t remember seeing such a storm, while according to them, production insurance is not worth it compared to the small profits they receive.
