Hahn replaces Commissioner Fule

Austrian Johannes Hahn, the current Commissioner for Regions, will take
the leadership of Neighboring and Enlargement this November, and
guarantees that the EU enlargement process will continue.

The successor of the Czech Stefan Fule explains that the Commission will focus more on quality than the speed of this process.

“I am satisfied because this is what I want to do in the next five years, because this is a key moment for Europe, for establishing another relation with our neighbors. The neighboring policy is vital and the continuity of our enlargement process is reflected by the title of my new position as Commissioner for the European Neighboring and the Enlargement Negotiations. That’s why the enlargement process will continue, but it is certainly related to the quality and not how fast it was made”, Hahn declared.

Turkey remains an example for a slow membership process, since they have been negotiating since 2005, but they became part of the Customs Union in 1995.

Croatia is the latest country entering the EU in July 1st 2013. Only two Balkan countries have already opened the membership negotiations, Montenegro and Serbia. Albania and Macedonia enjoy the candidate status and have a high dialogue level, but they are still waiting for the negotiations to start. Kosovo hs not signed the Stabilization Association Agreement, while Bosnia remains a potential candidate.
