The European Commission is each day more prone to review the possibility of accepting Western Balkan countries in the EU as a block, which would help to guarantee peace in the region and enriching the EU as well, according to the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn.
“He spoke for the media during a meeting with European Union Foreign Ministers in Brussels. “Member countries are more ready to address the enlargement issue”, said Hahn for the daily Austrian newspaper, Wiener Zeitung.
Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia are officially EU candidates, while Kosovo and Bosnia are working for the same status.
The EU sees the region as very important as regards migration control, fighting security threats coming from Russia to radical Islam.
“The member countries have understood that peace can be established in Balkan, and that the EU accession is vital for it”, Hahn said.
“Western Balkan and its 20 million residents, who want prosperity, are a very attractive market for the Block”, Hahn said, adding that a new member state of the block is not a burden, but enrichment.
The Commission said that they don’t support the idea of admitting countries at different times because that would create division. More efforts will be needed to enable weaker countries to get closer to the strength of the EU.
