The EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, declared for German media that Albania and Northern Macedonia can hope for a positive recommendation, based on the reforms undertaken by the countries.
Hahn said that after the European Parliament elections, the European Commission is most likely giving a positive recommendation, which will serve as the basis for the final decision of the member countries.
“Only by undertaking credible policies we will keep pushing the Balkan countries towards reform, and preserve our influence in the region”, Hahn said.
If the EU changes its stance and doesn’t recognize the progress reached by these countries, the consequences would be dramatic, according to Hahn. They would affect every country in the region, even the progress reached so far for resolving the Kosovo-Serbia conflict.
