Hundreds of Greek citizens, relatives of the Greek soldiers killed in
Albania, traveled to our country on the National Day of Greece. Jorgos
Zografaqis, from Kreta, says he is grateful to the Albanians who helped
him.
“My brother got involved with the war by January 1941. He was among the first ones who were killed by Italian bombardments after Kuqar, in Permet. One day before he was killed he received a telegram in which he was notified for the birth of his son. He couldn’t enjoy that news. He could never see his son. I am here with my nephew to take something from Albania and leave something from Crete here”, says Zografaqis.
“We know that it is difficult to find the tomb. We often come to Albania to commemorate him, because it is an event that marked our life and that of the entire family”, he said.
Greece has returned once against to the request for finding the tombs and have Albania’s cooperation in it.
“Their remains are holy in our national hymn. We want to find those remains and we appeal this request to our Albanian friends we have here. We want to find them and bury them according to the 3000 year tradition of Greeks. We hope that the agreement with Albania becomes functional as soon as possible”, said the Greek Ambassador, Eleni Surani.
The head of the association for the martyrs of 1940, Jorgos Surlas, the man who reiterated this request to Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta during his latest visit.
“I asked the Parliament Speaker about what is the obstacles for not finding the remains of the people who fought against fascism and who died beyond the interests of the country? How can we build new relations and improve the ones we have? We want to be with you, but allow us to collect the remains of our fathers”, Surlas declared.
This time they had a politician from Tirana too, Vangjel Dule from the United for Human Rights party, who said that they will cooperate for finding and collecting the remains.
