The Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is participating in the summit of the “Berlin Integration Process” in Tirana, spoke to the media about the case of Fredi Beleri, the candidate arrested for corruption, who was still elected mayor in the southern city of Himara with a Greek minority.

“I want to emphasize my respect for the independence of Albanian justice, but Fredi Beleris has the right to be sworn as mayor of Himara”, said Mitsotakis.

“Our position is clear. I do not want to interfere in the processes of independent Albanian justice, but Fredi Beleris has the right to sworn even when he is in custody, which I will make clear to Prime Minister Rama. I hope we will be able to resolve the matter. A right fully in line with European rules of the rule of law. It is important that he vows to remove this significant shadow that undoubtedly affects Greek-Albanian relations.”

“Resolving the issue is a necessary condition for Greece to take the next step to start the negotiation process between Albania and the EU. I hope and wish that this problem will be solved in the spirit of cooperation and goodwill, without influences. Relations between the two states unfortunately, in recent months are influenced by this issue, our friend Albania has made important concessions, referring to the case of the elected mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri, who has been in custody for five months.”

“Greece firmly and steadfastly supports the perspective of the admission of the Western Balkans to the EU”, he added.
