Greek Ambassador meets Berisha and Panariti

The introduction of the new Greek Ambassador to Albania, Leonidas
Rokanas, was expected with interest after strong declarations were
exchanged between on high rank politicians of both countries during the
celebration of Albania’s 100th anniversary of independence.

However, things seem to have settled down in less than one month, while the new Greek ambassador brought to Prime Minister Berisha the best greetings from the Greek Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.

As announced on a public statement, these greetings were followed by reconfirmation from Greece, as an EU member, that they will support Albania’s EU membership efforts.

The official announcement doesn’t indicate if Berisha and the new Greek ambassador discussed the maritime border issue.

The first agreement was rejected by the Albanian Constitutional Court, while it seems that Greece doesn’t feel that that verdict should be necessarily implemented.

However, this issue was mentioned during the meeting of the Albanian Foreign Minister with the Greek Ambassador.

“Both officials agreed that we must work together to reach an agreement that is acceptable for both parties and that is based on international laws”.

War Law and rejection of Albanian passports, Panariti: Moratorium must be postponed to a final solution.

The Foreign Ministry says that Minister Panariti reiterated his request for abolishing the Greek “War Law”, which he considers old and absurd, and that would further improve the relations between the two neighbours.

The official announcement does not comment about the Greek Ambassador’s position on this request or any other important request of the Albanian Foreign Minister.

Concerned about the rejection of Albanian citizens from crossing the Greek border due to the language used for toponyms on their Albanian passports, Minister Panariti asked Greece to postpone the moratorium and allow all Albanian citizens to travel with the current documents, until a final agreement will be reached.

The Albanian Foreign Ministry declared that this issue was also raised with concern by the Albanian Ambassador in Athens, who appealed the Greek Foreign Minister to postpone the moratorium until a mutual agreement will be reached.
