The media of Athens announced today that the Greek government agreed to start the process for signing the Defense and Security Agreement between the EU and Tirana, based on the specific draft agreements with Albania and other candidate countries in the Western Balkans.

The Greek government, despite public statements and criticism of the imprisoned pro-Greek mayor of Himara Municipality, Fredi Beleris, agreed to start the process for signing the agreement between the European Union and Albania.

Internal discussions between EU bodies started in January of this year, but a few days ago specific drafts of an agreement with Albania and other candidate countries of the Western Balkans were proposed.

“Especially important is Albania’s success in launching cooperation in cyber defense issues and dealing with hybrid threats, as these areas result from a privileged relationship of Tirana, so far, with the United States of America. In other words, the phenomenon observed is that Washington treats the “Strategic Compass” and in general the strategic autonomy of the EU with suspicion, but Albanian PM Rama manages to discuss the same issues and be accepted by both sides of the Atlantic – writes among other things the article on the Greek network “Athenanews”.
