Greece to return pensions for their minorities

A few hours before the European Parliament elections, and the second
round of the local elections in Greece, the Entity of Agrarian Insurance
declared that elder minorities in Albania will start receiving their
pension after June 1st, payments that had been interrupted since
February 2013.

He gave this declaration in one of the private televisions, saying that this is an initiative of Prime Minister Samaras.

According to Xenofon Vergini, this is about the pensions of 22,000 elder citizens from Albania and the former Soviet Union, which were interrupted after the voting of the mid-term law in the Greek Parliament for the economic reforms.

This law included the the change of some criteria, making it almost impossible to benefit a minimal pension without 20 years of stay in Greece and without receiving pension from another country.

The vice leader of Omonia in Greece, Jorgos Jumakas, declared for Top Channel that he greets the initiative of the Prime Minister, but he holds reserves about the realization of this promise, since the law should be approved by the Parliament and no parliamentary session will be held until June 1st.

There have been several promises in the past months about the return of the pension for Greek minorities in other countries, but none has been done so far. There are suspicions among the community that with this declaration right before the elections, the New Democracy Party is simply aiming the votes of at lest 70,000 minorities that have received the citizenship and who can vote for the European Parliament elections.

However, according to the Entity of Agrarian Insurance, a press release is expected to be published in the next week regarding the procedures that will be followed and the criteria that those who are interested need to complete.
