The Gerek Parliament has ratified an agreement between the Greek
Republic and the company that administers the Trans Adriatic Pipeline
project, which will bring natural gas from Azerbaijan to Europe through
Greece, Albania and Italy.
The biggest opposition party abstained and asked for negotiations that could bring higher profits for their country. The Communist Party, Golden Dawn and Independent Greek Party also voted against.
The Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Changes, Iannis Maniatis, who visited Albania recently as part of the delegation led by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizellos, declared that this is a work that improves the geopolitical position of Greece in the region.
The Deputy Minister of Environment, Asimaki Papageorgeou, declared that this tipeline makes Greece an important energy connection. He submitted to Parliament the proposition of the Company shareholders, who say that Greece can own 5% of its shares after the network will start operating, in 2009.
He has also underlined that the pipeline will bring life to the Northern Greece, by crating 4000 new jobs in the beginning, and 10.000 later. Above all, it will keep a low price of the natural gas for consumers, especially after the negotiations for the privatization of the Greek Gas Distribution Company, DEPA, by the Russian Gazprom.
