Bishop Andon, one of the highest clergymen of the Albanian Orthodox
Church, in an interview for Top Channel commented the recent
developments in Permet.
According to him, the property belongs to the Orthodox church, and based on the document, once there has been the Church of Saint Mary of Bazaar, demolished by the communist regime.
“We have not occupied the church or the Culture Palace. We entered this building by respecting the property return procedure and we were ready to pay the additions that were made to the building. When we entered the building the trials started and unfortunately we were not present in two of them. The truth is that we are dealing with a holy place, and even if the building was demolished, we are the owners of the land and this is proved with documents”, declared Bishop Andon.
When asked about the negotiations with the Permet Municipality regarding this situation, Bishop Andon says that the church has offered its cooperation for helping the municipality.
“We are negotiating with the Municipality. We have not started this today. The negotiations started with the predecessor of our Mayor, and we offered our help to establish a new building for the culture palace, such as the Military Home of Permet or another building. We have offered our help and we are asking the Municipality to give us back this historic object, so that we can return it to its destination”, the Bishop declared.
As for the Albanian citizens who were blocked from crossing the Greek border by our neighbour’s authorities, Bishop Andoni has condemned these actions by saying that what happened in Permet should not affect the Albanian immigrants.
“We are sorry that the Albanian and Greek citizens are facing problems in Customs, if this has anything to do with the church of Permet. These are separate things and we have nothing to comment on this”, Bishop Andon declared.
