The Greek government vouched of having secured the funds for keeping the
two Greek schools in Korçë and Himara working, through a declaration of
the Greek Foreign Minister, Stavros Lambrinisdhis.

“Although in difficult economic times, the Foreign Ministry made all possible efforts to cover the economic expenses for the functioning of these schools, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education”, says the declaration of the Greek Minister.

In the same declaration, Athens criticized the Albanian government for the policy of declaring ‘Minority Areas’, which makes it impossible to teach other minorities who live out of these areas. The minister said that this way, the Albanian government has arbitrarily limited the recognition of the Greek Diaspora, infringing its international obligations.

The Greek minister also emphasized that the function of the “Omiros” school in Korçë and that of the Greek School in Himara have a great importance, and that they support it with any means through the Greek institutions in Albania.

After recent publications in Greek local media saying that these schools were being closed for economic reasons, Papandreu government was criticized by MPs of the conservatory party “New Democracy”. One of them even declared that “it is positive the fact that these schools will function in areas that have not been recognized as minority areas during the time of Enver Hoxha, but that they belong to “Hellenism” since the antiquity”.
