The daily Greek newspaper “Kathimerini” says that the news for
dismantling the Syrian chemical weapons in Albania has alarmed the Greek
government, which thinks that there is a potential environmental danger
for the entire region, especially if they are planned to be dismantled
in southern Albania, close to the Greek border.
There are many chances to spread the contamination, regardless of the preventive measures that official Tirana and the west could take, says the newspaper, quoting sources from Athens. For this reason, the Greek authorities have made a clear position on this issue and are taking diplomatic steps to stop this from happening.
“This could be reached by creating a joint front through the Albanian neighbors, who should cooperate and convince Tirana to not accept the elimination of the dangerous Syrian weapons, even if the western financial promises could be huge”.
What are the alternatives?
“Syria has uninhabited deserts in its southeastern territory, and since the weapons are already in their territory, it would be the best solution for dismantling or burying them. Russia and the United States could also have large areas within their territory where they could destroy these weapons, by sharing equally the number of weapons they decide to dismantle”, the newspaper says.
