After publishing some of the declarations given by the prison guards who
are accused for the fatal torture against Ilia Kareli, after the latter
had killed a Greek prison guard, the Greek media have published part of
the indictment of Prosecutor Georgia Toutoutnzi.
The indictment says that there were 15 Nigrita prison guards who have tortured the 42-year-old prisoner as retaliation for the murder of their colleague, Jorgos Tsironis.
There are 12 indicted prison guardians, two officers and one external guard. They poured him buckets of cold water so that he could feel bigger pain, while they hit him on different parts of the body, mainly on his back, on his feet, soles, chest, stomach and head.
All these tortures were made in the waiting room of the Nigrita prison, also known as “the refrigerator” by the prison guard. The result of these tortures are multiple bone fractures, some of which have damaged the internal organs and causing his death.
On March 27th they sent Kareli at his prison cell, where he was left alone and wet, not even visited by the doctor. During these five hours he has passed away. According to the indictment, the damage made on the chest has caused his death. The media has also published some photos from the room where the prisoner was tortured to death, where his blood can be seen on the walls, on the sheets and the mattress.
According to the media, the photos have been made by the prison employees who were insulting and beating Kareli. Two of them have served in the Special Forces of the Greek army.
