Government votes to remove excise on energy drinks

The Parliamentary Commission of Economy removed excise on energy drinks, a decision that was decided only with the votes of the majority members.

The excise on energy drinks was imposed in 2014, after the Rama government came to power.

Jorida Tabaku, MP of the Democratic party, reminded the Socialists that they had accused the Democratic government of being corrupted for not imposing excise on energy drinks. “Who is the corrupted one now? Who is using fiscal packages that benefits specific brands?”, Tabaku declared.

Ervin Bushati, from the majority, said that the market has changed and that there is not just one company now, but several, and that excise didn’t reduce their consumption.  “We need to see another solution to stop consumption for children and people with diabetes”, Bushati declared.

Although DP considered the action as partially favouring some companies, they didn’t vote against. The only one to vote against was the Socialist MP, Erion Brace.

Removing excise reduces the budget by 2 million EUR a year.
