Government to invest with private operators in six strategic sectors

The Albanian government may be a shareholder in strategic investments, for profit purposes, together with private companies.

The Council of Ministers has approved some special decisions that allow the government’s participation in direct investments and decide the criteria for how the project can receive the status of a strategic investment.

Six economic sectors will be considered as strategic: energy, mining, transportation, agriculture, tourism, techonology and development, and areas of economic development priority. Only projects in these sectors will receive the strategic investigation status.

According to the Council of Ministers, the inclusion of the Albanian government in these investments might be undertaken by the government itself, but it may also receive propositions from private companies that are part of the investment.

These amends allow the government to make direct investments in building hydropower plants, agricultural farms, tourism and other sectors, cooperation with private entities, etc.

The government inclusion might be through financial capital form the budget or by offering real estates and machineries.
