Government rejected environmentalists requests for Waste Import Law

The majority rejected requests of environmentalists for the waste import
law. But they are open to discuss limiting quotas for importing and
processing quantities. MP Eduard Shalsi met with environmentalists, but
no agreement was found.

“We have always been open for this initiative that would serve to manage the waste materials, starting from the ones we already have in Albania. We have discussed establishing limitations for imports and processing levels, and we are looking to remove taxes for the recycling industry”, Shalsi said.

The MPs of the majority updated the representatives of the Alliance Against Waste Import with hearings which, according to them, will continue until the law is voted in Parliament. But there was no agreement among them.

Brisida Gjikondi, activist, said that “We will not change our position, they will not change theirs. For us it is important for the Waste Import to not pass”.

Environmentalists had received support from the opposition leader: “We want the Presidential decree to be approved, together with a moratorium for the waste import, until citizens can express their opinion in a referendum, because no government can decide anymore about this, only the people”, he said.

The Alliance Against Waste Import will continue to protest on October 30th.
