60% of the pollution in Albania is caused by vehicles. The average age of vehicles in our country is 15 to 20.
The Ministry of Environment is preparing a draft which is supposed to bound drivers to adapt their cars, so that Euro 0, Euro 1 and Euro 2 standards can reach minimally Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5.
Euro 0. – 1985-1992
Euro 1. – 1992-1996
Euro 2. – 1996-2000
Euro 3. – 2000-2005
Euro 4. – 2005-2008
Euro 5. – 2008-2016
There are around 100.000 vehicles that need to be adopted or taken out of circulation. As for import, no vehicles under Euro 4 will be allowed.
Current car owners will have six months to adopt their gas emitting parameters. For imported cars it will take three months.
The Ministry of Environment says that these measures could reduce pollution three fold, but how much will citizens pay for it?
“It will start from 200, 300 EUR. Owners of 20-year-old cars will have to invest 1000 Euros”, says specialist Eno Zeneli.
