Albanian authorities reported today that they have doubled the number of special bodyguards that will protect prosecutors and judges because, according to them, they are threatened by crime and the corrupt.
Out of 49 troops, the new structure of the Special Protection Unit will now have 103 people. The armored unit, otherwise known as ‘RES’, was proposed by the general director of the Police, Muhamet Rrumbullaku, and signed by the Minister of the Interior, Taulant Balla.
The two officials were earlier in one of the Prosecution Council meetings about the measures that need to be changed not only to protect the lives of prosecutors and judges, but also for the security perimeter of government buildings.
Police officers who will protect the threatened prosecutors and judges are reported to have to serve all over the country and this change is reported to have been approved as a matter of urgency following increasing demands, two of them whom the crime threatened or by placing explosives in the car, such as Doloreza Mudabelliu and Merita Selimi.
The Special Protection Unit has its own budget and provides for another special operational structure, tha officials say.
With the exception of the head of SPAK prosecution office, Altin Dumani, who due to his duty is guarded by the Guard of the Republic, Irena Gjoka as special chief judge has four officers of the guard due to her function, and two more were added after the court decision for the “Partizani” file.
Seven prosecutors and judges are currently guarded due to threats and serious cases under investigation.
