The Albanian government took a first step towards building a new airport in the south part of the country for international flights. It has authorized the Ministry of Transports and Civil Aviation Authority to begin tender process for a feasibility study for the construction of an airport.
The government has made available 30 million lekw for the project, which will decide the place where this potential airport will be constructed, possible travelers capacity and profits. The study which will be monitored by the Ministry of Transport will also decide if the investment will be made with public or private funds.
The idea of a new airport in the south of the country aims to increase the number of foreign tourists on the southern Riviera, mainly through international charter flights. Legally the project is possible after a renewed agreement between the government and the Tirana International Airport, which previously had exclusivity of international flights.
