Government and opposition debate Nation’s Road toll fee

The government had waited for today’s plenary session for answering to voices from Albania and Kosovo who criticized them about the toll price on the Durres-Kukes highway, which is mostly frequented by Kosovo citizens, hence called “Nation’s road”.

The Minister of Infrastructure declared that the maintenance project of the company will not affect businesses in both sides of the border or even citizens.

“The PPP project will invest 262 million EUR. It will be paid by road users. Why do we have this price? Because that is the traffic. There is no economic impact from this fee. Albanian businesses will not be affected at all”, Gjiknuri declared.

“You have not done anything besides washing your hands with 120,000 EUR. This means putting a border between Northern Albania and Tirana”, Basha said.

The confrontation between Rama and the opposition leader, who was Minister during its construction, continued even later.

“There are only two solutions: either all taxpayers pay for its maintenance, or only those who use it”, Rama said.

“Why is it that both taxpayers and users are paying for it? You keep taking 24 ALL per liter of fuel for this road. Now those who travel will also have to pay?”, Basha said.

“We know the story. We know about the defendants who are in this rom. We know about other happenings as well. This road has not been completed”, Rama said.

“I would do once against, 1000 other times, with great pride, what I did with the Nation’s Road. You’ve been in government for five years and you don’t have a single fact. You are angry of jealousy. You haven’t advanced with any project. Your only project is cannabis, heroin and cocaine”, Basha declared.

“Rather than waiving a torn flag of a perverted patriotism about something that has nothing to do with patriotism, you should provide alternative formulas”, Rama said.

The main argument of the Rama government is the idea that the road maintenance through a private company was decided by the Berisha government. Berisha confirmed it and said that it was cancelled later, due to the cost.

“We didn’t place the fee and we wouldn’t place it, because it is an artery of our nation. Not only for Albania, but for Kosovo as well”, Berisha declared.
