Gonxhe Caushi, Albanian candidate for Mayor of Mitrovica, challenging Serbs

Gonxhe Caushi, after serving for four years as member of the Mitrovica
Communal Assembly, now is ready to take control as Mayor, although, as
she admits, it is almost impossible in that area.

Her candidacy, however, as a clear symbolism: “PDK is offering a clear message to Serbs here, that the Albanians of this area need to have their representative”, Caushi says.

But how difficult was for her to conduct an electoral campaign in a town of Serbian majority?

“Security is minimal here. There have been all kinds of incidents, young people being beaten. I don’t know if it has been politically related or just casual occurrence”, Caushi declared.

Albanians in Mitrovica have different requests from other Albanians in Kosovo.

“The main problem is returning Albanian citizens to their properties in north. There are 70 usurped homes and the rightful owners have not been allowed to go there. They need a permit from the Mayor. Serbs, on the meanwhile, keep building without permit”, Caushi adds.

Northern Mitrovica remains a no-go zone for Albanians, although things are different from one year ago. Gonxhe’s candidacy is a reality that Serbs also have to accept: Mitrovica is one, undividable, and it belongs to Kosovo.
