The Forest Service Directory in Gjirokaster declared that the abuses
with the administrative role of forests and pastures by the local units
has been followed by catastrophic consequences in the entire district.
According to the Forest Service director, Spiro Diamanti, during an inspection on terrain they have noticed degrading of the forests, which have been cut outside of all criteria in all local units, due to illegal permits given illegally for exploiting forests and pastures for personal profits of the heads of communes and communal councils.
In the entire territory that this directory is monitoring, there are 20.000 hectares of communal forests, 2900 private forests and 5890 ha of state owned forests, which means that the biggest asset is being administered by the communes.
Control over deforestation
The decreased temperature during winter is increasing the citizens’ requests for fire wood, while the abusive cases have increased in forests. The police in Berat is controlling the area, and the Forest Directory says that dozens of people have been fined.
Despite the intervention, the forest damage continues and the fines given by the state administration are not being collected.
