Gjirokaster, abandoned Lunxheria

Lunxheria is a village at the Lunxheria mountain, in front of the town
of Gjirokaster. It is an area rich in resources, natural beauties,
cultural monuments, churches, monasteries and original ancient houses
built in black stone.

The local residents are renowned for the strong folk tradition, the commercial fairs, for their cuisine and hospitality. However, long emigration has caused its youngest residents to leave their homes in masses, resulting with an abandoned town and idle tourist resources.

Lefter Nerenxa and his wife, Persefoni, live in an old typical tower built since 1866. Lefter says that there are hundreds of residences like this in Lunxheria, but it is difficult to have the young residents return and revive the town.

Lunxheria is still outside the tourist destination map for the south. Tourists who visit it are few in numbers and spontaneous. However, despite the rare potential, Lunxheria lacks of accommodating services and policies that can encourage tourism.
