In his first visit in Austria as President of Germany, Frank Walter
Steinmeier and his Austrian counterpart, Alexander Van der Bellen,
appealed EU countries to pay more attention to Balkan.

“EU should lend a hand to the six Western Balkan countires. The situation of the former Yugoslav countries keeps being difficult. Stability in Western Balkan is guaranteed if there is European perspective”, Steinmeier said.

Austrian President, Van Der Belle, told DW that EU should pay more attention to Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo, especially in a time when ethnic conflicts are prevailing, and while Russia is truing to extend its influece.

During his visit in Vienna, where the government follows a course against immigrants, Steinmeier criticizedthe simplified formulas for resolving the refugee issue in a national level.

According to him, whoever avoids Europe to resolve this crisis, is being short-sighted. The Foreign Austrian Minister supports the request for closing the Mediterranean itinerary, However, the German leader thinks that the solution should be comprehensive: “We need to give refugees reason to stay in their country”, Steinmeier said.
