Thorsten Frei, the rapporteur for Albania at the German Parliament workgroup that is focused on Western Balkan matters, says that Albania has a special interest to them.

In an interview for Deutsche Welle, he speaks about the current hot topic in the country, that of the Albanian Interior Minister, Fatmir Xhafaj.

“It is clear that people cannot be punished for something done by a family member, but every individual must be treated separately. This is why the behaviour of the Interior Minister must be observed, and I can say nothing else about it”, he said, adding that Germany is watching the case closely.

“There are 800 judges and prosecutors, but only five have been vetted. Some of them avoided the vetting law by resigning. However, it is the start of this process and we cannot give a final answer about it. There are other matters as well about which we haven’t started talking yet, such s the Electoral Reform, an old duty which the European Commission has raised as a problem earlier”, said Thorsten Frei.

When asked if he sees any danger for the Vetting law to be used as pressure against Judges, Frei said that everyone should be treated equally in front of the law. He brought the example of Saimir Tahiri, when the Parliament majority refused his immunity.

“Ministers and MPs should not be treated differently from other citizens”, says the German lawmaker.
