German MP: “Tahiri’s immunity, unclear. Albania’s credibility, very important”

Stephan Albani, German MP with Merkel’s party and member of the Committee for Southeastern Europe, said for Deutsche Welle that Albania needs to implement the required criteria before starting EU negotiations.

For this, according to Albani, a strong political will is needed, which makes sure that corruption and organized crime can be fought with legal instruments.

The MP brings the case of Saimir Tahiri as an example, saying that he should have no immunity while there is a trial attempting to shed light on a matter.

“This is very important in order to secure the credibility of Albania in the international scene”, Albani said for Deutsche Welle.

Referring to Albania’s expectancies for opening the accession negotiations, Albani said: “This is the beginning of this year. We have the progress reports which will be published in February, a process that continues until half of the year. It’s not a long time, but not short either”, he said.

The German MP underlined that the government and opposition should behave appropriately if they are asked to follow a new perspective in the EU.

“If this is not guaranteed, then every criterion is missing. I hope that both parties understand this. They should learn from the past, change their behaviour with each other and act reasonably”, the German MP declared.
