Thorsten Frei, rapporteur of the parliamentary group CDU/CSU at the German Parliament, said in an interview for Deutsche Welle that Brussels’ decision for Albania and Macedonia cannot be taken either as a “yes” or a “no”.
Frei says that the ruling coalition was thinking to put in vote two motions for Albania and Macedonia, but it was abandoned, after seeing that the EU Council was not taking a decision.
Merkel didn’t mention the enlargement topic at the lower chamber of the German Parliament.
Frei said that Brussels agreed that the agenda will be again in discussion in 2019, after the European Parliament elections. But it is clear that before the German government votes, they need a mandate from the German Parliament.
According to him, the accession negotiations will not start before the end of 2019.
