German Foreign Minister: “Serbia must recognize Kosovo before joining EU”

“This is the only way for them to become EU members”, the German MFA added at the joint press conference with Ramush Haradinaj.

“We underlined in Belgrade that if Serbia wants to progress with the EU, they need to complete the rule of law criteria, and, of course, accept the independence of Kosovo. This was a pre-condition for their EU path, and you can count in our support for this”, Gabriel said, adding that Kosovo as well must be prepared for unpleasant matters this year.

“Kosovo must face matters such as the specialized institutions which should treat possible war crimes. I was happy to hear that there was goodwill to resolve the border demarcation with Montenegro. We support this, because it is for the best of the Kosovo citizens since this criterion would allow visa liberalization”, Gabriel declared.
