The German Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, said for Deutsche Welle that the consensus reached in the EU for opening the accession negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia in 2019, is a very important step.
“The EU took a very important decision this week. Starting from 2019, there will be talks with Albania and FYROM. We were strongly committed to this guiding signal, which appreciates the achievements of the reforms made during the past years.
“The negotiations process in Brussels has never been easy, but we are happy that a compromise was finally made possible among all 28 countries. I appeal Tirana’s and Skopje’s politicians to see this success as a stimulus for keeping up with the reforms. Germany will keep up its support in this direction.”
