Johann David Wadephul, vice leader of the German Parliament, greeted the new initiative of the untied opposition in Albania regarding the electoral reform.

“The open and all-inclusive dialogue, agreed by all political forces, is an important step for drafting the new electoral reform, which should be in full accordance with the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations, as requested by the German Bundestag through the September 26th resolution.

“We encourage all parties to keep up with this spirit until they successfully complete the difficult tasks of reforming the electoral law”, he declared.

The Christian Democratic MP, who is also chairman of his party’s Parliamentary work-group for the Western Balkans, gave these comments in an exclusive interview for the Deutsche Welle.

The electoral reform and the functionality of the Constitutional Court were the two main conditions set by the German Bundestag for opening the EU accession negotiations with Albania.

Although this compromise has been welcome, it only resolves the procedural issue.

As noted by sources from inside the Christian Democratic and Christian Socialist circles, the Bundestag will also have to take into account the content that will come out of this agreement.

The second condition of the German Parliament resolution requires that the electoral reform should be done in full accordance with the recommendations issued by OSCE/ODIHR on September 5th, 2019.

The Bundestag has imposed seven other conditions that need to be fulfilled until the opening of the first chapter of the negotiations.
