Being among the cement factory, quarries and limekilns, Kruje is
definitely not one of the areas with the best air quality. According to
the regional environment agency, the number of limekilns in the last
three years has been significantly minimized, from 376 to 61.
But none of them has an environmental permission. However, the agency has been trying to force the usage of only wooden materials for fueling the kilns fire.
During the night, but also in broad daylight, several limekilns continue to burn tires or plastic waste, very high-risk elements for the environment. If there is a minimal awareness about this issue, it exists only due to the fact that the media has been regularly denouncing this pollution through the years.
