The two families of the Beragozhd victims opened their doors today for
the funeral of the five young boys who list their lives yesterday while
looking for scrap metal within a mine. Three of them were brothers, the
two others their cousins, all in their early twenties.
The boys had entered an abandoned mine to find scrap metal, and they had taken a power generator to make light and to cut the irons. But because the gallery’s door was blocked, they entered a narrow passage that they had created.
But the generator gas has asphyxiated the five of them, who eventually died. Due to the high presence of gases, the authorities were able to pull them out only after several hours.
Their parents are in very psychological conditions, with the mothers of the victims both hospitalized in Pogradec.
Two other people died on the same day in another mine near Librazhd.
The victims, engineer Drini Bogdani and his miner Haxhi Danga, where inside the gallery when the ceiling was detached over their heads. The security measures in this gallery are almost non-existent. The most dangerous areas are kept on place by tree branches cut from the surrounding vegetation. And this is not an old mine. It was opened in 2009, after it was given to a concession, and it has 15 employees.
But the security investments are almost minimal, and this is not the only mine in these conditions from those that have been given in concession.
