The Commissioner Stefan Fule said that he had been informed to be
optimistic about the candidate status in June, based on the results
given from Tirana and from the institutional communication with the
member countries.
“I am optimistic, and I need to say an informed optimist, which means that there is no sense to be pessimistic. We have worked closely with the Albanian authorities and the other interested parties for the delivery, according to the member countries recommendations.
We have worked with the member countries for the preparations on the June decision that will be issued by the European Council. We are now making the draft. I am speaking about the report that will be presented to the member countries.
I want to say that there is enough evidence to not only repeat, but also reinforce the recommendation that we presented in the past year. I hope that the member countries will send a bases of positive signals, and that the real decision will be taken for Albania”, Fule declared.
This declaration of Commissioner Fule was made during a press conference about the 10th anniversary of the most important European Union enlargement with 10 Eastern European countries on May 1st 2004.
Regardless of the stances held before the European elections against a further enlargement of the Union, the Commissioner declared that besides the increased population, economy and the international role of the European Union, the member countries have profited even individually from the enlargement in 2004.
Going from 15 to 25 countries brought a 0.4% to the Gross Domestic Product of Austria, with 11 billion EUR more, while Netherlands and Britain increased their export with 50%, due to the increased possibilities for European products.
