After greeting for the last time as Commissioner those that he called as
friends of the EU enlargement, Stefan Fule presented went in front of
the European Parliament to show the member countries the panorama of the
aspiring countries in the EU membership path.
After five years as Commissioner for Enlargement, Fule underlined that Albania remains a candidate country for the EU. He underlined the new achievements, especially in the fight against narcotics and corruption. But the main concern of Brussels remains the lack of political dialogue in the country, while the outgoing Commissioner considered both sides as responsible for this situation.
“Albania has received the candidate status in June, as a recognition for the reforms they have achieved so far. The government has shown political will for the reform. There have been successful operations in the fight against drugs with impressive results, and a commitment in the fight against organized crime. But we are concerned about the political climate, the current boycott of the opposition. The government must make sure that the opposition will have certainty to perform their democratic duty in Parliament. The candidate status offers responsibilities and should be seen mostly as a duty. The government must show that they can push the reforms forward. This should be done by politics in an all-inclusive way”, Fule declared.
As for Kosovo, the European Commission declared that this country must first resolve the political stalemate and build the new institutions without losing anymore time.
“The post-electoral blockage should be overcome, while the Parliament and the government must be created urgently”, Fule underlined.
As for Macedonia, for which he said that the European Commission wants to open the negotiations, but it must fulfill the necessary conditions first, such as the free speech. He valued the process with Serbia, and added that the improvement of the relations with Kosovo remain vital.
