The Albanian government has six open agreements for seeking and
exploring and fuels two others for thyeir exploitation. Almost all of
them signed with companies that exist on the internet periodically,
created recently and that often publish sensational news.

According to the “Shqip” newspaper, all current agreements have been signed in the last decade, while a really serious gas company, renowned in the world market, searched during the 90s and left without being able to find sufficient sources. These companies invested 600 million USD for opening wells in Berat, Tirana, Narta, Durres, Gjirokaster, etc. And in all cases they showed no interest for passing to the oil production phase.

Giants such as “Shell”, “Oxidental Petroleum”, “OMV”, etc, were replaced by small companies that did nothing else then publishing big news. In 2008, another company pretended of having discovered billions of oil barrels between Durres and Koplik. No one has heard from this company since then. For “Sky Petroleum”, the irresponsability of the government in signing speculative agreements risks turning into a serious problem for the tax payers.

Another exploring agreement was signed with a company named “Island International” for the Durres area, once searched without success by Shell. In Southern Albania, along the border with Greece, another concession was given for a company named Capricorn Albania. There are no details for this company, or about their assets.

Three years earlier, the government signed an agreement with a company named IEC Visoka, in Visoka, Fier. This company also is very enigmatic.
