The Shahini is one of the 60 Roma families that benefited from the social homes built at the former Military Unit in Lanabregas.
The parents and their three children now own a two bedroom apartment near the Tirana River, Allias.
“Our life changed completely. Our children live in a cleaner place. It was a surprise because we didn’t know when we’d be getting the new homes. I was at work when my wife called me and said she took the key. I couldn’t believe it”, says Genc Shahini, the father of the family.
He collects metals for a living, and his first daughter, Katia, attends the third class at school. She has started to help her mother with chores around the new house.
“I washed the dishes, the cupboard, the floor. I am very happy. This is a better home”, Katia says.
For the Roma family, which was affected by the rehabilitation of the Tirana River, this house was a dream for many years.
