“We support the candidacy of Albania and we trust in the process that
will make Albania join the European family as soon as possible, where
Albania will have the place it deserves”, declared the President of the
French Senate last December, one week before the European Union Council
decided against Albania’s status. This decision was taken with the votes
of five countries, including France.“We support the candidacy of Albania and we trust in the process that
will make Albania join the European family as soon as possible, where
Albania will have the place it deserves”, declared the President of the
French Senate last December, one week before the European Union Council
decided against Albania’s status. This decision was taken with the votes
of five countries, including France.

This Wednesday, a few months earlier, Jean Pier Bell is still in Tirana, besides the Albanian Parliament Speaker, Ilir Meta. He explained the position held by his country regarding the candidate status.

“France didn’t say ‘no’ to the European Perspective of Albania. These European countries saw it as reasonable to have Albania continue the European integration agenda that had been foreseen. As I discussed with the Parliament Speaker, it is necessary for Albania to continue creating a credibility with the European Union countries in its integration path. This is a slow process. The French also have problems with the long time that it takes to European institutions for these decisions, but this is for consolidating the relations between the aspiring European Union countries”, declared the President of the French Senate.

Besides the slow procedures of the European Union institutions, Bell explained the difficulties that other countries had to face, such as Greece, which had raised doubts among some member countries.

“We do not act under the influence of any extremist group in our respective countries. These groups might have ideas that bring us back in the history    . Every decision that we take is outside their influence”, declared Jean Pier Bell.

Meta: We are patiently waiting for the opposition to join

While the skeptic countries have not declared anything about the vote in June, the Parliament Speaker of Albania declared that the majority will do everything possible for delivering the integration obligations. Meta declared that the left centered parties are determined to offer consensus with the opposition. He declared that they are patiently waiting for the territorial reform.

“Although the majority has 3/5th of the Parliament votes, we have waited and we are still waiting patiently for the opposition to sit as equals in leading the Commission and for making it functional. I hope they will get inspired by integration and not boycott, which is an old disease of our politics, something that we should abandon immediately and go faster towards Europe”, Meta declared.
