France is changing its stance regarding the EU accession negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia.

The French Ambassador to Skopje, Christian Timonie, who used to say that before opening the negotiations, the EU should reform the enlargement process first, is now underlining that the two processes can be done in parallel.

“Our issue is with the reforming of the functionality of the EU because it makes no sense to be accepted in a Union that has no order.

“From this point of view, I can say that the processes can be led simultaneously.  The path ahead with the reforms is not short, but it is also the path of our reforms within the Union, which is also long.

“They will probably be done together and I think that we will have to work in that direction.  This is a positive approach and I think that we are the most sincere, because we say things as they are.

“In this moment, what some considered a historic mistake, we can turn it into a historic opportunity”, said Christian Timonie, the French Ambassador to Skopje.

The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, declared that the map of the EU must add the Western Balkan countries as well.

“It needs discussions, but I think that the process hasn’t been interrupted, but it needs to be urgently encouraged.

“I think that there are good chances for the process to start with Albania and Northern Macedonia in the next months”, said David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament.
