Bamir Topi will return to politics and through the New Democratic Spirit
party. Invited on Top Channel’s Top Story, he answered to the question
of journalist Sokol Balla for the his political activity after leaving
the duty as president. The first steps will be taken next week, in the
official meeting with the leader of this new political force.
Bamir Topi, former President
I have always felt free with my duty as President, and besides the privilege and the experience, I can say that I benefited a new dimension and now I am ready for new challenges. I think that I have always been coherent and I have always said that I would announce position only after the mandate was over. Now that the mandate is over, I can say that I will stay in politics.
I will meet Mr. Oketa for a political decision making and if there will be a new line, we will publish it. It is up to them to decide my role.
As regards the opposition’s accusations against the Ministry of Defense and the Military Secret Service, President Topi declared that investigations must prove if there have been illegal surveillance against the opposition, and he criticized the opposition that if there have really been illegal surveillance, they shouldn’t have left it with that.
Topi declared that in 2007 it wasn’t his request to run for President, but was offered by the leader of the majority.
Bamir Topi, former President
“I have never asked to become President. It was a proposition coming from the majority and my answer was “yes”. I have stood to this conversation to the end, when I saw that the person who proposed it started to change the behavior. I had a clear and willing deviation for avoiding the first offer.”
According to the former President, the disagreements had started much earlier, with the elections of 2005 when the Prime Minister preferred to negotiate for the new government with the former opponents, rather than the members of his own party. This was a bitter moment, especially when you come to power after being in opposition as vice leader of the Democratic Party. Topi says that he was the MP that had received more votes than anyone, and this was the reason that he kept being in the head of the Parliamentary Group, despite the tense communication. The former President accused Prime Minister Berisha of wanting all the power in his hands. Speaking about the future, he declared that the country needs a recycling of the political figures.
Former President Bamir Topi
Absolutely yes, we need a political rotation. The fact that I have had such strong critics for the power administration is an effort for controlling even the smaller things. A government that gives these symptoms, that misuses and falsifies the vote of the President, needs no other sign. It is indispensable to have a political rotation, but I am not predicting how.
