Tritan Shehu, who was Albania’s Foreign Minister under Berisha’s rule, before 1997, responded to the accusations launched by Kosovo’s Prime Minister.
After Berisha appealed the Presheva Albanians to not follow the “affair” of the President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, to unite with Kosovo, Thaci responded with harsh accusations, saying that Berisha, during his time as Prime Minister, had sold diesel to Miloshevic when the entire world had put sanctions on him, a diesel he used to fuel tanks that killed Albanians. Thaci also accused Berisha of having arrested several Kosovo KLA heroes during that time, and considering the KLA a terrorist group.
Tritan Shehu says he was surprised by these accusations coming from Thaci: “I cannot stay without underlining the irreplaceable role of Berisha not only for opening Albania to the world, but also in Kosovo and the entire region”, Shehu writes, saying that Berisha is the person who connected Albania and Kosovo through the Nation’s Road.
For Tritan Shehu, Berisha’s role in the last 25 years gave Albania huge achievements towards NATO and the EU.
