The Catalans who describe themselves as the silent majority opposed the
independence referendum. They filled Barcelona’s streets this Sunday
with this slogan, while police say that there were 350.000 participants.
The demonstrators gathered at the Urquinaona Square, waving the Spanish, Catalonian and EU flags, while changing “Long Live Spain”.
Mario Vargas Llosa, a Noble Prize Winner in Literature, and the former President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell Fontelles, a renowned Catalonian Socialist, addressed protesters at the end of the demonstration, saying that beyond past memories, some tragic and some glorious, Spain is also a a country of rule of law, which will not be destroyed by separatism.
Borrell said that Catalonia is not like Kosovo, where the right of Albanians had been violated systematically.
“Catalonia is not like Lithuania, Kosovo or Algeria, a militarized invaded territory. There is no room for comparison”, Borrell declared.
Spain is now facing a political crisis, with the Catalan leaders turning their referendum promises into reality, despite the decision of the Constitutional Court, which declared the voting illegal.
