The pines forests in Gjirokaster are not being destroyed only by fires,
but also by people who cut trees for lumber. This has happened recently
in the main natural park of Viroi.
A great number of pines with trunks thick to 50 centimeter in diameter have been cut without permission from the Pine Directory. The area of this land has been contracted by an individual to be used as pasture for 20 years, while another one wants to turn it into a vineyard. The flagrant case has been reported at the Gjirokaster Forest Directory and Police.
“After receiving the report from a citizen on September 11th, we sent the Forest Police inspector who identified 14 cut trees. We followed the respective protocol, such as assessing the damage and fines”, declared Edmond Kristafi from the Forest Police.
50 hectares of pastures were burned a few days ago, together with a large number of pines.
