Foreign Minister on Judiciary Reform: “We must not lose our strategic orientation”

The Albanian Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, held a lecture at the
Shkoder University, where he spoke against voices that recently have
been opposing the judiciary reform with the argument that it damages
Albania’s sovereignty.

“We cannot have stable economic development without protection from the rule of law. This is why I cannot agree with those who seem nostalgic of communist spy movies, and try to portray this reform as foreigners meddling with our affairs, or even as if our sovereignty is being damaged. This reform is a concrete realization of the demands for justice, made by our collective conscience”, Bushati declared.

The Foreign Minister was asked about the letter that his colleague, the Minister of Integration, Klajda Gjosha, sent yesterday to the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Good Neighboring, Johannes Hahn. In that letter, Gjosha expressed concerns of the Socialist Movement for Integration against the International Monitoring Operation, calling them as anti-constitutional.

“We have established a code of ethics of not commenting personal opinions. We do need more effective judiciary institutions. We do need assistance from international experts, because justice based only on interest has created roots in our judiciary. The public has lost its trust, and, unfortunately, for the first time after so many years, we are seeing obstinate opposition against our strategic partners. We think that we should never lose our strategic orientation. Albanians have always been on the right side of history for the past 27 years, and this reform is a concrete realization of the demand made by our collective conscience, and that demand is for changes that will make a difference in political, media and business relations”, the Foreign Minister said.
