Foreign Minister Bushati: “2018, decisive for Albania’s EU integration”

The Albanian Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, speaking as chief
negotiator for our country’s EU integration, did not spare critics about
the way how the process was handled so far.

“The main element we should focus on is the convergent one. The way how our institutions operate, how our state and Albanian society are reformed, and the economic situation. These are the topics that create the necessary pressure in our society, so that governments, the main decision makers, can take the right decisions”, Bushati said.

Just returned from Slovenia, where he had a meeting with the EU representative, Federica Mogherini, the Albanian Foreign Minister admitted that the EU moves slowly as regards enlargement, but today, the ball is on Albania’s field.

“The EU is moving, although not with the pace we want. But if there is good will for making reforms and changes, we can’t say EU has not responded. It is clear that the ball is on our field now. We need to reinforce national consensus and political dialogue, so that the European integration becomes what we wish to consider as our only national project”, Bushati added.

Bushati underlined that the next year will be decisive for Albania’s EU path.

“Since we are about to have the new Parliament session, I hope that the political good will between the government and opposition can be shown in a more structured cooperation. I hope that all political actors have taken their lessons from past events. 2018 is decisive for the EU integration, since on Spring 2018 the EU is going to discuss about the enlargement package. If there is a positive decision for the accession talks, then we will have 18 other decisive months, because the EU will have its institutions renewed in 2019. When there is a renewal of institutions, there is no necessary focus on this process”, Bushati declared.
