Over 850 ha of land in the Ane e Malit administrative unit have been invaded by water in the Shkodra district in northern Albania in the latest floods caused by the recent rainfall.
Resident Bahri Meti says that within a decade his crops have been flooded 5 times. For the farmer from Oboti, the family’s only income is provided by the land, which for this season will not give him anything.
“I have 100 acres of land, planted with tomatoes, tangerines and cabbages, but now everything has come to an end. Floods to me means lack of bread. I was flooded in 2010, 2011, in 2018, as well as two years ago and now again,” said farmer Bahri Meti.
Today, the farmer should have been at the market stall selling his tomatoes and tangerines, but instead of the income from agriculture Bahri only counts the damage.
“Only tomatoes here have cost me 50 quintals of damage, while the damage to all crops amounts to 5.6 million ALL. I have nothing left to sell, these plants as you can see the leaves are withered, after two days they will be rotten”, he adds. In Shkodër in this season, it is difficult to find a success story for farmers, since agriculture was taken over by waters of the river.
