Floods in Lezhe and Shkoder

22/01/2014 00:00

Thousands of hectares of land, farms and residences were flooded last
night by the rain. The most affected areas are Shkoder, Lezhe, Fushe
Kruje and Thumana.

The river waters in Zadrima have flooded the lands around, causing damage on farms. The cause of the floods are not only rains, but also the blocked drainage systems which showed problems with the first strong rain of this winter.

The Director of the Drainage Board in Lezhe, Petrit Gjoni, declared that the situation might get worse. He added that the Gjader River has not been cleaned for 25 years, and that the rains have caused problems in Kurbin, Gjorm and Shengjin.

Local authorities in Lezhe say that the emergency situation needs to be declared. 1500 out of 3500 hectares have been flooded only in Zadrime. The Minister of Agriculture also visited the area.

The flood proportions are considerable in Shkoder too, in the Bushat commune. 1500 hectares of land have been flooded in the Jush Mountain, due to the drainage system. The situation around the Buna River is calm.

Floods from Erzen and Ishm Rivers

The heavy rains have flooded the Durres districts within a few hours. The mostly damaged area is the Babuq commune, in Kruje, where 300 hectares of land are found under water.

The rivers of Ishem and Erzen have flooded wide surfaces of land in Thumane, Nikel and Hamallaj.

While the Emergency Headquarters declare that their pumping systems are working in full capacity, the situation at the Ishem delta remains busy due to the heavy flood and the urban waste that is deposited.

The Drainage Board has started an intervention in Fushe Kruje and Nikel, while all local units that ave been affected by floods were asked to prevent this on time, and several residences have been evacuated. The Head of the Emergency Headquarters in this district, Prefect Roland Xhelilaj, declared that the situation is under control.
