The Rapporteur for Albania at the European Parliament, Knut
Fleckenstein, declared that there will be no additional conditions for
opening the accession negotiations.
After a series of meetings held with main exponents of the Albanian politics, Fleckenstein focused on the implementation of the judiciary reform. He said they are aware it won’t be easy, but underlined that the decision for opening the negotiations is not exclusive to the European Parliament.
“The decision comes from the Council of Europe, not from the European Parliament. However, we will work hard so that the negotiations with Albania are started during the first semester of the next year. I reiterate, it is not the European Parliament to decide about this, but the Council. Albania must work hard after the negotiations, and we will discuss for other matters as well”, Fleckenstein said.
“In this situation”, he added, “There is no room for additional conditions beside the five priorities. I spoke to the Albanian officials for the five key priorities. It would not be honest to have other conditions before the negotiations”, Fleckenstein declared.
